In Kindergarten and first grade, our students learn about the introductory elements of design and explore color and brush techniques. During their final years in the Lower School, they explore value, line, color theory, and composition. Throughout the Lower School art program, we emphasize delight in our Creator and the basic elements of art.
All eighth grade students take a Drawing and Painting Foundations course. In this course, they learn how to produce well-proportioned drawings with a focus on creating volume using light and shadow shapes. They engage in the process of developing skills that have been handed down through the ages with a focus on classical subject matter like drapery, plaster casts, portraiture, and still life.
In our Upper School program, students gain competency in the use of graphite, charcoal, and oil paint where they produce monochromatic and full-color works. Subjects include anatomy with a focus on skeletal and muscular structures, figure drawing, portraiture, perspective, still life, and landscapes. Students produce master copies and original works.
