In Kindergarten and first grade, our students learn about the introductory elements of design and explore color and brush techniques. During their final years in the Lower School, they explore value, line, color theory, and composition. Throughout the Lower School art program, we emphasize delight in our Creator and the basic elements of art.
All seventh grade students take a Foundations course, which develops their academic drawing skills. In this course, they learn how to produce well-proportioned drawings with a focus on creating volume using light and shadow shapes. They engage in the process of developing skills that have been handed down through the ages with a focus on classical subject matter like drapery, plaster casts, and still life.
In the final years of high school, the skills, tools, and techniques learned in the earlier grades flourish. In our Upper School program, students gain competency in drawing and painting from direct observation; explore charcoal as a medium; and produce complex still-life drawings and full-color oil paintings.
